TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Vice President Lai Ching-te emphasized the significance of Taiwan's net-zero emissions goal on Tuesday (May 23) at the 2023 Fubon Sustainability Forum, a collaborative event by Fubon Financial Holding Co. and the Risk Society and Policy Research Center.

Lai said Taiwan shares the global mission of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. He highlighted the government's strong commitment to the issue, evident in the government's efforts to develop pathways and enact legislative amendments to achieve the goal and fulfill global responsibilities.

Lai views the challenge of climate change as an opportunity for Taiwan, stressing that achieving net-zero emissions opens doors for the growth of green businesses. The government plans to invest NT$900 billion in collaboration with private enterprises.

"We can transform pressure and crises into opportunities for Taiwan's progress and success," Lai remarked.

The forum centered around Taiwan's preparations and transformations in the face of multiple crises, including climate change, geopolitics, and global inflation. "These multiple crises will become the world's new normal, so none of us can stay out of it," added Fubon Group Chairman Daniel Tsai.

In January of this year, Taiwan passed the "Climate Change Response Act," which aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030 and establish a system for collecting carbon fees.
