TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Since the earthquake in Turkey and Syria on Feb. 6, the Taiwan Center in Reyhanli has provided food and clothing to refugees and quake victims.
However, questions have been raised regarding the center's utilization of donation funds, prompting a statement from their on-site manager.
According to Waleed, Chiu Chen-yu, CEO and founder of the Taiwan Center, sends the funds first.
"He will send the donations from the association in Taiwan and forward them to the association in Turkey," Waleed said.
"After I receive the donation and the information I get, I go to the bank, and I receive the receipt only, without the money," he added.
Waleed then applies to the government, stating the amount the center received from Taiwan and the center's plans to utilize the funds.
Afterward, the Turkish government needs final approval before plans can proceed. Despite harsh conditions with sub-zero temperatures, the center continues to work tirelessly in its relief efforts.
Due to the sudden arrival of displaced individuals caused by the powerful earthquake, the Taiwan Center has been facing challenges in meeting the demand for sufficient supplies and clothing for those in need.
On a brighter note, the Taiwan Center gained growing public attention in the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake, leading to a rise in donations of both supplies and funds to support their relief work.
However, utilizing funds in specific areas frequently requires consultation with Chiu. Yet, poor connectivity and unstable Wi-Fi have posed communication difficulties.
Waleed pointed out that he had been trying to get in touch with the CEO, but the unstable internet has complicated things.
He further explained that Chiu is tirelessly gathering funds for the local community in Turkey, frequently on the move. Once he is available, the center will be better equipped to distribute more aid to those in need.
