6名嫌犯全都在監獄中舉槍輕生，警方進入現場發現6人都已死亡，而典獄長在稍早也已經獲釋。 12日凌晨3點多 法務部公布，戒護科長獲釋。隨後凌晨3點51分，現場再度傳出20幾聲槍響。 12日1點35分左右 在監獄東側門的走道上，一名嫌犯手持長槍走動，還一邊抽菸。 12日凌晨0點5分 側門連續9聲槍響，現場警方大喊「子彈上膛」，氣氛緊張，警力全面戒備！ 11日晚間11點40分 警政署長進入監所內。 11日晚間10點多 矯正署長拿著嫌犯手稿，站在高雄監獄外，念出5項聲明內容。 11日晚間7點 特勤中隊進入監獄。 在員警護送下，3位疑似受刑人家屬出現在高雄監獄外，據了解，家屬將會分5批進去對歹徒親情喊話。 11日下午接近4點 警方獲報，立刻在監獄大門以及東、西2個側門進行警戒，沒想到囚犯挾持人質、對空鳴槍，雙方駁火長達好幾分鐘，歹徒最後不敵警方火力，打消逃跑計畫，又挾持人質退回監獄內，警方也立刻呼叫警力趕赴現場支援。警力層層戒備，高雄市警察局長陳家欽與刑大大隊長林炎田指揮部署，派了超過200名警力。 11日下午3點多 高雄大寮監獄會客室群起騷動，不只會客緊急停止，管理獄卒還不斷要家屬快離開。 【嫌犯武器】 4把65K2步槍、90短槍6把、子彈共200多發 因為一般情況下，獄警只會攜帶警棍，所有槍械放在槍械室，沒有特殊狀況不會使用，嫌犯挾持人質，再破壞槍械室的鎖，取得槍枝。 【首謀鄭立德背景】 竹聯幫尊堂高雄分會會長，出身高雄左營眷村，有多項組織犯罪和槍砲前科，犯下多起擄人勒贖、恐嚇取財，甚至還肇事逃逸、找人頂罪，2012年8月10日遭高雄警方圍捕，當時他手槍上膛，企圖拒捕，最後被警方壓制，入監服刑。 6名受刑人疑似早有預謀，在最後一批接見時間，先持利剪挾持接見室主管2名替代役男，刺傷賴姓管理員，再衝進戒護科辦公室，搶走獄警身上槍枝，大膽開了10多槍，副典獄長賴振榮第一時間趕到，提出交換人質，順利讓獄警和替代役男先獲自由，接著典獄長陳世志、戒護科長王世倉先後趕到，再度用自己安危交換副典獄長。 【高雄監獄】 總計收容受刑人2606人、受保安處分36人，總計2642人。   【典獄長陳世志背景】
