Outgoing Prime Minister of Tuvalu, Kausea Natano, expressed confidence that the majority of newly elected parliament members will support diplomatic relations between Tuvalu and Taiwan. He stated that both novice and seasoned politicians, as well as senior MPs, share this sentiment and will likely continue to support the ties with Taiwan. After the elections, the 16 newly-elected members of Parliament will engage in complex negotiations to form different factions, with the faction holding the most members ultimately forming the new government and electing a prime minister.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is considering a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping after the U.S.-China talks at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. Kishida plans to meet with Xi the day after U.S. President Joe Biden’s meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss unresolved issues between Japan and China, including Japan’s request for China to remove import restrictions on Japanese seafood products. Additionally, the dialogue aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and promote regional stability. Japan’s National Security Secretariat Secretary General Akiba Takeo will travel to China for coordination efforts. The APEC summit, which includes leaders from 21 member countries, will take place in San Francisco from November 15 to 17.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokesperson, Jeff Liu, urged Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to oppose any changes to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait to China. Taiwan hopes that Australia will defend its shared interests and values with Taiwan while maintaining stable relations with China. This comes after Albanese’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who claimed that China does not engage in exclusivist blocs or confrontational politics. MOFA disagreed with this statement, citing China’s behavior in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. Liu emphasized the shared interests of Taiwan and Australia in upholding freedom, democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and ensuring peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. He also highlighted the common Trans-Pacific Partnership interests between the two nations. Liu further noted the steady development of relations between Taiwan and Australia, with Taiwan becoming Australia’s fifth-largest trading partner and fourth-largest export market, while Australia is Taiwan’s leading supplier of energy and mineral resources.

Kuomintang presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih visited the LDP headquarters in Japan on Tuesday (Aug. 1), meeting with Kōichi Hagiuda and possibly former PM Tarō Asō.

新冠肺炎(COVID-19)疫情爆發後，不少人面臨留職停薪或被裁員的窘境，一名40歲網友近日表示，他是某公司的約聘機台PM保養人員，已經做了15年，挺過2008年金融海嘯，卻因新冠肺炎影響被公司勸退，讓他不禁對於人生下半場感到擔憂。

環保團體委託台大公衛學院和中興大學，聯手調查深澳電廠營運後的健康風險，推估電廠運轉15年後，全台將有576人因為PM 2.5而死亡，這還不包含因為PM 2.5生病的人，另外釋出的重金屬影響也沒納入，所以死亡人數恐怕遠高於此。當地自救會表示，接下來將串聯居民，要求新北市長參選人表態停建，深澳電廠的議題，勢必也將牽動年底大選。

總統府祕書長陳菊近期表示，新北市的摩托車輛大概是218萬輛全台最多，汙染的程度絕對超過深澳發電廠。環保團體批評不能因為機車產生很多空污，就把興建電廠合理化，批評陳菊是在轉移焦點，另外也有民間團體抨擊，比起高污染工廠，二行程機車的PM 2.5排放量根本微不足道，現在卻利用《空污法》修法，未來將限制二行程機車路權，非常不合理。

面對空氣品質惡化的問題，高雄市環保局今天指出，採多管道改善，同時訂定多項有罰則且加嚴空氣污染排放的自治條例，環保局會多管齊下管制併同稽查，以抑制空污排放。
