    104 Job Bank in Taiwan has launched the "Youth General Knowledge Class" event, inviting high-school and university students to create their own podcast episodes to gain industry experience and earn extra income. The job bank’s marketing director, Chang Pao-ling, stated that there are currently 25,000 job opportunities in sectors such as art design and print media that primarily evaluate candidates based on portfolio work. This trend has grown by 44% in the past five years. The initiative aims to help job seekers showcase their curatorial abilities and increase their competitiveness. Job categories such as "Communication Art/Design" and "Print media" demand portfolios for 13.5% and 13% of their openings, respectively. Recently, job postings have started asking for portfolios from applicants in various positions, including 3D animation designers, video game programmers, and web front-end engineers. A survey conducted by 104 Job Bank revealed that 64% of businesses advised students to take part-time jobs to broaden their perspective, while 45.3% expected students to join clubs or teams to foster skills in interpersonal communication and leadership.   • CDC new receives batch of Novavax XBB vaccines

    Taiwan has received 462,800 doses of Novavax’s XBB vaccine, with distribution starting on January 9, 2023, according to the Taiwan Centers for Diseases Control (CDC). In May of this year, Taiwan categorized Covid-19 as a class 4 endemic disease, similar to seasonal flu. The decision was based on clinical trial reports and immunization recommendations from the U.S., the European Union (EU), and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW). Unvaccinated individuals are advised to receive two doses of 0.5mL each, administered at least four weeks apart. Those who have already received a COVID-19 vaccine should receive a single dose of 0.5mL, provided at least three months have passed since their last dose. The domestically available XBB vaccine includes those produced by Moderna and Novavax, and recipients can choose either brand for vaccination.

  • Teen remanded, accomplice under guardianship after stabbing

    A teenager involved in a knife attack on a fellow student has been remanded in custody, while another teen accused of incitement has been placed under guardianship, as ruled by a youth court on Tuesday (Dec. 26). The attack occurred the day before at a junior high school in New Taipei City, leaving the victim with a severe neck wound, resulting in significant blood loss and, at one point, signs of life ceased. Investigations revealed that the accused is a third-grade junior high school student surnamed Kuo. Allegedly, he attacked to defend a female student who had been reprimanded by the victim. The girl had entered the victim’s classroom in search of a friend and was reprimanded for not being in the correct class. The victim was revived after five hours of treatment at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, officials reported. Kuo and the girl, originally under investigation for offenses related to causing injury, had their charges escalated to "attempted murder" late on Monday, given the critical danger the victim faced. The police believe that the two had the intention to kill.

  • TSMC unveils A14 tech, eyes 1.4nm node production

    TSMC, the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturing company, announced progress in the development of its 1.4nm-class technology node, A14, during the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting. The company plans to begin volume production of its 2nm process chips, N2, in 2025, with the N2P process expected to reach mass production by the end of 2026. Market analysts predict that TSMC’s A14 process could debut between 2027 and 2028. While TSMC is also developing cutting-edge technologies like CFETs to boost chip performance and energy efficiency, the initial A14 process is expected to use GAAFETs technology. The use of High-NA EUV lithography technology in TSMC’s future processes, including the A14 process, remains unconfirmed. Other industry players like Intel are also adopting next-generation EUV technology with a numerical aperture of 0.55.

    Evergreen Marine Corporation has expanded its fleet with the commissioning of a new "A class" container ship, the EVER ALP, boasting a maximum capacity of 24,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). This vessel, among 13 ordered by the company, brings luxury to the high seas with crew accommodations rivaling star-rated hotels. Constructed by South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries, the EVER ALP features nine decks and a range of leisure facilities, including a gym and social lounge. Crew quarters on the ship are designed to match that of star-rated hotel rooms, each spanning 16.53 to 46.28 square meters with private bathrooms. The working environment on board is notably comfortable, with third officers and engineers drawing an average monthly salary of about NT$170,000. For entertainment and relaxation, the ship is equipped with a library, karaoke facilities, treadmills, and dining options featuring a variety of international cuisines. These A-class container ships incorporate eco-friendly and energy-saving features, ensuring compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) emission standards. With the addition of the EVER ALP, Evergreen Marine’s current fleet totals 210 vessels with a combined capacity of approximately 1.66 million TEU, marking a significant increase in the company’s global shipping capabilities.
