  • MND announces new draftee training options

    The Ministry of National Defense (MND) has announced that new draftees in Taiwan can now apply for specialist positions based on their skills and certifications during their sixth week of training. Alternatively, they can choose to serve in the main combat units voluntarily. Draftees who do not participate in the expertise selection will have the opportunity to choose their service unit in the seventh week through a lottery system. The MND plans to draft 9,127 men in 2024, with the army responsible for training 7,514 of them. The recruits will be assigned to guard units based on their household registration, with a total of 12 echelons. After completing their training, the conscripted men will be distributed to guard units on the home or outer islands closest to their registered residence, or they may opt to serve in the primary combat unit according to their preference. The first batch of recruits, consisting of 670 men, will begin training on January 25 under the supervision of the 206th Brigade in Northern Taiwan, the 302nd Brigade in the Central region, and the 203rd Brigade in the South. The training is expected to last for eight weeks.

  • LE SSERAFIM to make Taiwan debut at 2024 concert

    LE SSERAFIM, a South Korean girl group, will be the special guest at the 2024 Red White Superstar Concert in Taipei, Taiwan. This will be their first performance in Taiwan as a group. Member Kazuha also shared a warm message to fans, expressing excitement to meet FEARNOT from different regions and hoping to transmit positive energy through their performance.   • Party numbers drawn for Taiwan’s legislative elections

    The Central Election Commission (CEC) publicly held a party number drawing for the 11th legislative elections in Taiwan. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secured the number 6 spot, the Kuomintang (KMT) got number 9, and the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) drew number 12 for the at-large legislative seats. Prior to the draw, the TPP’s top legislator-at-large candidate and the KMT’s leading counterpart were seen exchanging pleasantries and handshakes. The CEC reviewed and approved the qualifications of the 16 participating parties before the public lottery. Out of 178 applicants, 177 individuals were confirmed to meet the requirements for legislative candidacy.

  • Taiwan’s CEC draws ballot numbers for presidential race

    The Central Election Commission (CEC) held a draw to determine the candidate numbers for the ballots ahead of Taiwan’s presidential election. The Taiwan People’s Party (TPP)’s Ko Wen-je and Cynthia Wu drew number one, while the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)’s Lai Ching-teh and Hsiao Bi-khim will be number two. The Kuomintang (KMT) duo Hou Yu-ih and Jaw Shaw-kong secured the number three spot. The lottery drew numbers in the order that parties registered for the election: DPP, TPP, then KMT. The official list of presidential and vice-presidential candidates will be announced on Dec. 15. Several televised policy presentations, a vice-presidential debate, and a presidential debate are scheduled leading up to the election.
