TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's weather authority, forecasted heavy localized rainfall in the eastern and southern mountainous regions Friday (May 15). The administration forecasted afternoon thunderstorms in the western mountains, with a chance of downpours in the south. The weather patterns reflect the ongoing meiyu, or plum rain, season.
The CWA issued a strong wind advisory for six counties and cities, including New Taipei City, Taoyuan City and Pingtung County. The advisory will last until Saturday (May 16) night, the CWA said. Officials urged residents to watch out for debris when heading outside. The weather in Taiwan will stabilize as moisture levels decrease starting Saturday.
Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) noted that the third wave of the meiyu front is nearing its end. He forecasted thunderstorms and strong winds in the east due to a slight temperature rise in northern Taiwan. Wu said the front will shift south to the Bashi Channel over the weekend, improving the weather with only occasional afternoon showers or thunderstorms.
Wu predicted that the weather will stabilize from Tuesday (May 19) to Thursday (May 21), with mostly cloudy to sunny conditions prevailing. The east coast and Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) will experience occasional rain. Afternoon mountain areas across Taiwan may see brief thunderstorms, he added. The forecast suggests a return to typical summer weather patterns.
