TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A stationary front will bring unstable weather to Taiwan from Tuesday (May 12) through Friday (May 15), the Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署) reported. Northern and central regions face the heaviest rainfall, with showers and thunderstorms expected in areas north of central Taiwan, Yilan and Hualien. Other regions will see mostly cloudy skies with a chance of localized afternoon thunderstorms.
The administration predicted noticeable showers or thunderstorms in northern Taiwan from Wednesday to Thursday, with heavy rain likely in some areas. Central Taiwan and Yilan will also experience brief showers or thunderstorms as nearly the entire island faces rain chances. The rainfall focus will shift southward Friday, bringing brief showers or thunderstorms to central and southern regions.
The four-day weather system poses challenges for outdoor activities and commuters across the island. The front is expected to move away Saturday, leading to more stable conditions and mostly cloudy to sunny skies. The east and Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) may still see isolated showers, while southern and western mountain areas could experience localized afternoon thunderstorms.
WeatherRisk (天氣風險), a private forecasting company, noted the stationary front will gradually impact Taiwan from Tuesday to Friday, increasing atmospheric instability. The rainfall's range and intensity will vary during this period, the company said. The front's structure will be less defined Tuesday, with higher rain chances from central to eastern Taiwan.
As the front moves away over the weekend, an easterly wind will influence the environment. Weather conditions should stabilize across Taiwan by Saturday, with only windward eastern areas experiencing brief showers. Sunday will bring a more summer-like pattern, with a chance of brief afternoon showers or thunderstorms in mountainous areas. ◼
