TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan experienced a noticeable temperature shift on Saturday (May 9) as the northeast monsoon swept across the island. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) forecast cooler temperatures in northern and northeastern areas, with highs of 22°C to 24°C (72°F to 75°F). Central and eastern regions can expect warmer conditions, with highs of 26°C to 29°C (79°F to 84°F).

Northern Taiwan, Yilan (宜蘭) and Hualien (花蓮) saw cooler temperatures as the monsoon brought scattered thunderstorms. Other regions remained mostly cloudy, although southern mountainous areas may experience brief afternoon thunderstorms. The CWA noted that mornings will remain cool in these northern and eastern areas, but conditions will improve as the day progresses.

WeatherRisk, a private weather forecasting company (天氣風險), highlighted the contrast between northern and southern Taiwan. The monsoon and abundant moisture caused cloudy skies and brief showers from the north to the east, while the south remained relatively dry and warm.

The monsoon is expected to weaken on Sunday (May 10), causing temperatures to rise across Taiwan. However, the Greater Taipei (大台北) area and eastern regions may still see brief showers. WeatherRisk cautioned that weather instability may persist, with temperatures remaining slightly cooler than seasonal averages. ◼
