TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's team won two silver medals and one bronze at the 15th European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad, the Ministry of Education (教育部) announced Wednesday (April 15). The four-member team, selected from 329 female candidates nationwide, tied for 13th place internationally. A panel of 21 university professors selected the students to represent Taiwan.
Lu Peng-en (盧芃恩) from Tainan First Senior High School (台南一中) and Chang I-hsuan (常貽媗) from Taipei Fuhsing Private School (台北市私立復興高中) won silver medals, tying for 36th place in individual rankings. Lu, an 11th-grade student, began competing in math Olympiads during junior high school. Her teacher said she has exceptional skills in logical reasoning and problem analysis.
Chang, a 10th-grade student, has competed in numerous math contests. She said problem-solving is not just about finding answers but about refining her thought process through trial and error. Wu Cheng-fei (吳承霏), a 12th-grade student from Taichung First Senior High School (台中一中), earned the bronze medal and said she enjoyed the Olympiad's challenges.
Professors Kao Chu-lan (高竹嵐) and Wei Tzer-jen (魏澤人) of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (陽明交通大學) led the team as head and deputy leaders. Students who earn gold, silver or bronze medals at this competition can receive preferential admission to university programs, the ministry said. ◼
