TAIPEI (TVBS News) — FedEx (聯邦快遞) opened its new transshipment center at Taoyuan International Airport on Wednesday (March 11), marking the company's largest single investment in Taiwan in 35 years. The facility doubles the company's previous capacity in the region, reflecting FedEx's commitment to Taiwan's growth potential and sustainability goals. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality in its global operations by 2040.

Taiwan's Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) attended the inauguration ceremony, calling the investment a vote of confidence in Taiwan and its economic potential. "This investment is a recognition of Taiwan's potential and a vote of confidence in the region," she said. FedEx has incorporated advanced automated sorting systems to enhance efficiency, aligning its operations with sustainable development principles as part of its broader environmental commitments to reduce carbon emissions.

The new facility measures around 19,000 square meters (approximately 204,500 square feet), twice the size of the original site and representing a major expansion of FedEx's Taiwan operations. The advanced automated sorting system processes up to 9,000 parcels per hour, with import processing 2.5 times faster and export processing efficiency improved by 1.2 times. The facility handles express, oversized, and special shipments, including dangerous and perishable goods, making cross-border logistics faster and more reliable.

Liang Kai-wen (梁凱雯), deputy director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), the de facto U.S. embassy in Taiwan, said the center demonstrates U.S. confidence in Taiwan. "This transshipment centre will facilitate the expansion of future bilateral economic and trade cooperation," Liang stated. Salil Chari (蘇查理), president of FedEx Asia Pacific, said the center aims to support Taiwan's AI industry by using AI to handle basic tasks, freeing employees for higher-level responsibilities. ◼
