TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's prototype submarine Haikun (海鯤艦) begins its fifth dive trial on Tuesday (March 10) in Kaohsiung, marking the vessel's 11th sea trial overall as the nation advances its indigenous defense program. Military enthusiasts gathered at the port, waving flags and cheering "Go Haikun! Go Navy!" as the submarine departed around 8 a.m. The crowd demonstrated strong public support for Taiwan's submarine development efforts.
Military expert Chi Tung-yun (紀東昀) said the trial focuses on adjustments to enhance previous submerged tests conducted during earlier sea trials. Chi highlighted the reduced preparation time before departure as an indication of smooth pre-test checks and efficient crew coordination. The submarine may reach depths of up to 100 meters (328 feet) during this trial, Chi added, representing a significant milestone.
Future tests may involve overnight trials as Haikun enters endurance testing phases to assess battery performance under various depths and speeds. In February, Taiwan's state-owned shipbuilder CSBC Corporation (台船) released a video showcasing Haikun's initial sea trial achievements. The video featured the steering gear control system (船舶舵控系統) test and the process of submerging with open vent valves. ◼
