TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Latisha Chan (詹詠然), a prominent Taiwanese tennis player, announced her retirement on Wednesday (Jan. 21). In an exclusive interview with TVBS News, Chan revealed her future plans. She will hold her retirement ceremony at the Australian Open, becoming the first Taiwanese player invited to retire at a Grand Slam event.
Chan's career took a pivotal turn when doctors diagnosed her with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome at age 24. This diagnosis led her to focus on doubles, abandoning singles play, and she aspired to become the world No. 1 in doubles. The 1999 earthquake in Taiwan affected her family, forcing them to live in a container house, a period that fueled her tennis ambitions.
Reflecting her career journey, in 2017, Chan partnered with Swiss tennis legend Martina Hingis, and they won the Women's Doubles World Champions title from the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Chan described it as a significant career moment and expressed gratitude for past failures. She confessed that, after winning the title, rather than feeling ecstatic, she found solace in watching "Avengers" at the hotel, realizing the tranquility that comes with achieving a dream.
