TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator Wu Pei-yi (吳沛憶) unveiled the "Pet Disaster Prevention and Evacuation Manual" at the Legislative Yuan (立法院), Taiwan's legislature, on Friday (Jan. 16). The manual aims to bolster public knowledge on co-evacuating with animals during disasters, enhancing Taiwan's resilience.
Wu collaborated with the Taiwan Veterinary Medical Association (獸醫師公會全國聯合會) and Watchout (沃草) to develop this resource. She emphasized that as more families own pets, joint human-animal evacuation during earthquakes and typhoons has become a crucial part of disaster preparedness.
The Taiwan Parliamentary All-Out Defense Committee (立院全民防衛連線) published this manual to support the Ministry of National Defense's (國防部) "Taiwan's National Public Safety Guide" released last year. The manual is available for download online or through the veterinary association.
DPP legislator Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧) stated that pets are family members, and this manual provides practical principles for animal disaster prevention, benefiting both pet owners and non-owners. DPP legislator Chuang Jui-hsiung (莊瑞雄) also highlighted the manual as a symbol of preparedness, urging people to download it to better protect their pets.
David Tan (譚大倫), president of the Taiwan Veterinary Medical Association, detailed the manual's content, which covers pre-disaster preparation, disaster management, and post-disaster recovery, including animal CPR and first aid. Watchout's COO, Hung Kuo-chun (洪國鈞), remarked that the manual serves as a practical tool for families, enhancing national resilience and deterring potential threats.
