TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan High Speed Rail (台灣高鐵) announced on Friday (Jan. 16) its participation in a high-intensity security drill scheduled for Jan. 22 at Taipei Main Station (台北車站). The exercise aims to bolster safety measures following a deadly attack on Dec. 19 when a man threw smoke bombs and attacked with a knife, resulting in four fatalities near Taipei Main Station and Zhongshan Station (中山站).
During the drill, Taiwan High Speed Rail will operate normally, ensuring ticket sales and train schedules remain unaffected. The company will deploy additional staff to guide passengers, advising travelers to allow extra time for connections to Taiwan Railways and the Taipei Metro. The railway police will station officers at each station and assign both uniformed and plainclothes officers on trains to protect passengers。
Taiwan High Speed Rail emphasized its commitment to passenger safety, stating that peak-hour train security coverage has reached 100%. The company continues to enhance overall security measures. They have instructed all personnel to remain vigilant and strengthen security protocols. Security staff must report and address any suspicious activity immediately.
Train conductors and crew have undergone self-defense training before duty, and each train car features a Passenger Emergency Intercom (PEI). This system allows passengers to communicate directly with conductors in case of emergencies. Taiwan High Speed Rail's proactive measures aim to reassure passengers and ensure a safe travel environment.
