TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Labor (勞動部) released the results of a survey on Monday (Jan. 12), highlighting an increase in overtime hours for migrant workers in Taiwan's industries. The survey attributes this rise to the burgeoning opportunities in artificial intelligence, which have extended working hours in the manufacturing sector.

The survey also revealed that migrant workers in businesses earn an average regular salary of NT$30,000, marking a NT$1,100 monthly increase from the previous year. This rise results primarily from the adjustment of the minimum wage. Also, the average overtime pay for these workers has increased by NT$500 to NT$5,100.

Between July 2024 and June 2025, the non-regular annual salary for in-service migrant workers stood at NT$15,000, a decrease of NT$600 compared to the previous year. The report also noted that nearly 30% of businesses applying for additional migrant workers did not fully utilize their quotas, with 70% stating they had already met their manpower needs.

For foreign family caregivers, the survey reports an average regular salary of NT$21,000 and overtime pay of NT$2,800, totaling approximately NT$24,000 and marking a NT$400 increase from June 2024. Their non-regular salary remains at NT$7,100, with an average daily working time of 10.1 hours. The survey indicates that 65.8% of foreign family caregivers receive monthly leave, with 31.7% taking one day off per month.

Language barriers pose significant challenges for businesses employing migrant workers, with 34% of companies reporting difficulties for this reason. This issue also affects 34% of family employers who employ foreign caregivers. Other concerns include caregivers' tendencies to engage in activities like using mobile phones and chatting, which can disrupt their duties.
