TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's stock market closed down 11.49 points at 27,525.17 on Wednesday (Dec. 17), marking a 0.04% decline after a volatile trading session. The weighted index opened higher but retreated as the day progressed amid shifting market conditions. Trading volume reached NT$507.081 billion (around US$16.15 billion), reflecting mixed investor sentiment throughout the session.
The weighted index opened at 27,596.18, reached a session high of 27,780.69, and fell to a low of 27,469.6 before recovering slightly. The non-financial stocks index closed at 24,179.93, down by 68.8 points from the previous session. Financial stocks led the eight major categories with a 2.2% gain, while paper stocks dropped 1.14%, recording the largest sectoral decline.
Buy orders totaled 22,655,226 against 12,563,112 sell orders, with 8,935,062 shares changing hands during the session. Declining stocks outnumbered gainers, with 534 companies falling, 428 rising, and 122 remaining unchanged. The most actively traded stocks included TS Financial Holdings (台新新光金), Winbond (華邦電), the Capital TIP Customized Taiwan Select High Dividend ETF (群益台灣精選高息), Powerchip (力積電), and CTBC Financial Holding (中信金).
Top gainers included Fortune Oriental (吉祥全), Hanns Touch (精金), Compeq (華通), Copartner Tech (聯穎), and Farglory Group (遠雄), which posted the session's strongest performances. The biggest losers were RITEK (錸德), EZconn (光聖), Gigastorage (國碩), Evergreen Steel (長榮鋼), and WinWay (穎崴), which recorded the sharpest declines.
