TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Tainan City Government announced on Wednesday (Dec. 17) plans to install electric vehicle charging stations across all 37 administrative districts as part of its net-zero transition initiative. The city has activated several stations already, with additional installations underway to expand sustainable urban mobility infrastructure throughout Taiwan's historic southern city. The project represents one of Taiwan's largest municipal EV infrastructure investments.
The Bureau of Transportation (交通局) revealed in a press release that the project involves a total investment of NT$250 million (around US$7.96 million). Tainan plans to establish 90 stations featuring 180 slots for 200 kW fast chargers and 266 slots for 11 kW slow chargers. The expansion aims to meet growing demand for electric vehicle infrastructure as Taiwan accelerates its transition to sustainable transportation.
Tainan has activated three batches comprising 27 charging stations with 18 fast-charging slots and 34 slow-charging slots so far. The operational stations have recorded 475 uses, delivering a total of 10,676.853 kWh of electricity to EV users. The Bureau of Transportation confirmed the fourth batch will become operational on Friday, further expanding the city's charging network.
The fourth batch will add nine sites featuring four fast-charging slots and 11 slow-charging slots, enhancing accessibility for EV users. The Bureau of Transportation noted that most charging spots will serve exclusively electric vehicles. Drivers occupying designated EV charging parking spaces without charging will face a fine of NT$1,200 (around US$38) upon notification. ◼ (At time of reporting, US$1 equals approximately NT$31.4)
