TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's "Left-Handed Girl" (左撇子女孩) secured a spot on the Oscar shortlist for Best International Feature Film, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced early Wednesday (Dec. 17). Director Shih-Ching Tsou (鄒時擎) becomes the first Taiwanese female director to reach the Oscars shortlist, marking a historic achievement for Taiwan's film industry. The film advances among the top 15 contenders in the category.
Tsou expressed excitement over the milestone, emphasizing its significance in elevating Taiwan's presence on the global stage. The film, adapted from Tsou's personal life story, has screened at over 15 international film festivals, including Cannes, Zurich, Toronto, and Busan. "Left-Handed Girl" also won the Best Film award at the Rome Film Festival, adding to its international recognition ahead of the Oscar race.
Li Yuan (李遠), Taiwan's Minister of Culture, praised the film's Oscar progress through a press release, calling it a testament to Taiwanese cinema's soft power. Li expressed confidence in the film's potential to secure a nomination. The Ministry of Culture (文化部) credited its international promotional strategy and pledged continued marketing support for the film crew's North America efforts during the crucial voting period. ◼
