TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A cold front is set to bring a chill to Taiwan, with temperatures in the northern and central regions expected to drop to between 13 and 15 degrees Celsius on Wednesday (Dec. 17), according to Hsieh Pei-yun (謝佩芸), a forecaster at the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署). Some areas might experience temperatures as low as 11 or 12 degrees due to geographical influences.
The northeast monsoon is expected to affect northern Taiwan on Sunday (Dec. 21), causing temperatures to drop slightly, while the central and southern regions remain unaffected. By Monday (Dec. 22), cooler air from the monsoon will lead to a further drop in temperatures across the island. Hsieh noted that moisture will gradually depart by Sunday, but the strengthening monsoon will continue to bring brief showers to windward areas north of Taoyuan and the eastern regions.
The CWA warns of potential snowfall or ice above 3,500 meters in the central and northern mountainous areas on Friday (Dec. 19). The administration advises that on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 20), mid- to high-level clouds from the South China Sea will increase cloud cover and expand the range of rainfall, with higher chances of rain in the mountains and eastern regions.
Another cold spell is expected to arrive on Sunday, bringing rain and cooler temperatures to the north and east. Conditions will improve as the windward side dries by Monday. Wu Der-romg (吳德榮) stated that starting tomorrow, increased moisture on the east side will bring occasional brief showers to the north coast, the east side of Greater Taipei, and the eastern regions, while the west will remain mostly cloudy to sunny.
