TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's stock market plunged 330.28 points on Tuesday (Dec. 16), closing at 27,536.66 points in a 1.19% decline. Trading volume totaled NT$524.954 billion (around US$16.72 billion), marking a difficult session for investors as the weighted index opened lower and failed to recover throughout the trading day.
The weighted index opened at 27,721.1 points and reached an intraday high of 27,740.66 points before falling to a low of 27,355.67 points. The index excluding financial stocks closed at 24,248.73 points, down 328.63 points. The cement and ceramics sector led losses among eight major categories with a 2.82% drop, while financial stocks rose 0.25%, bucking the broader market trend.
Investors placed buying orders totaling 23,356,013 shares and selling orders reaching 12,845,694 shares, with 9,459,630 shares traded overall. Declining stocks heavily outnumbered gainers by the close, with 784 companies posting losses compared to 223 companies recording gains. Another 79 companies ended the session unchanged, reflecting the market's broadly negative sentiment.
The five most actively traded stocks were Taishin Financial Holding (台新新光金), Winbond (華邦電), and Yuanta/P-shares Taiwan Top 50 ETF (元大台灣50). Other volume leaders included Capital Tip Customized Taiwan Select High Dividend Exchange Traded Fund (群益台灣精選高息) and the Unified Taiwan Growth ETF. Top gainers included Ledtech (華興), Polaris (北極星藥業-KY), Edimax Technology (訊舟), Para Light Electronics (光鼎), and Neo Solar Power (聯合再生).
