TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A cold air mass from China will hit Taiwan on Saturday (Dec. 13), marking the first wave of cold weather this winter. Meteorologists warn that temperatures could drop to about 10 degrees Celsius (50°F) in open areas north of Miaoli, a county in northwestern Taiwan, with brief showers expected in northern and eastern Taiwan. Meteorologist Chia Hsin-Hsing (賈新興) said on his YouTube channel that the cold air mass will significantly cool the weather from Saturday to Monday (Dec. 13-15).
Chia noted that areas north of Taoyuan and Yilan will experience sporadic showers, with isolated rain possible in Hsinchu and Hualien. He explained that the coldest period is expected from late Sunday to early Monday (Dec. 14-15), when temperatures in northern open areas might plunge to 10 degrees Celsius (50°F). The Taipei weather station forecasts temperatures ranging from 13.7 to 14.2 degrees Celsius (56.7°F to 57.6°F) during this time.
Chia said Taiwan will enjoy mostly clear and stable weather from Monday to Tuesday (Dec. 15-16). Temperatures are expected to rise during the day on Tuesday but remain cooler in the morning and at night. Starting Wednesday (Dec. 17), sporadic afternoon showers could return to mountainous areas north of Taoyuan and in the Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung regions. Chia added that temperatures in late December and January tend to be warmer than usual. ◼
