TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Industrial Technology Research Institute (工研院) hosted the "Global Smart Healthcare Innovation Summit" on Friday (Dec. 5), drawing international leaders to Taiwan to discuss AI-driven healthcare transformations. Experts, including former U.S. FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn and University of Illinois Hospital CEO Mark Rosenblatt, shared insights into the latest developments in smart healthcare.

Tai Chien-cheng (戴建丞) from the Department of Industrial Technology, MOEA, emphasized the pivotal role of innovative healthcare in Taiwan's industrial upgrade. He noted the government's efforts to integrate AI, biotech, and ICT through specialized projects. Taiwan's strengths in ICT and chip supply chains enable it to provide the necessary software-hardware integration and clinical trial capabilities, enhancing its influence in the global innovative healthcare ecosystem.

The institute collaborates with Medtronic (美敦力) and Belgium's IMEC to advance international partnerships in smart surgery, focusing on minimally invasive systems and AI clinical decision-making. Chuang Yao-yu (莊曜宇), Director of the Biomedical and Material Research Laboratories, stated that AI has become a core driver of surgical innovation, with Taiwan excelling in big data analysis and precision machinery.

According to the Global Market Insights 2024 report, the global AI healthcare market reached $32.34 billion in 2024, with projections of growth to US$431.05 billion by 2032. The summit, themed "Transforming Healthcare through Digital Intelligence," explored the impact of AI on diagnosis, treatment, and surgery, aiming to deepen international cooperation.
