TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen (鄭麗文) met Friday (Dec. 5) with Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Chairman Sumi Shuuzou (隅修三). The KMT, Taiwan's main opposition party, emphasized enhancing exchanges with Japan across various sectors.
Cheng emphasized the party's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Japan in economics, technology, energy, disaster prevention, education, and culture during the meeting. The KMT revealed the meeting details on Facebook, highlighting the party's dedication to deepening bilateral relations with Japan. They aim to expand cooperation across multiple sectors to benefit both Taiwan and Japan.
Cheng highlighted her early advocacy for Taiwan's inclusion in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) during her tenure as a legislator, Taiwan's parliament member. The KMT Facebook post noted that Cheng and Sumi engaged in a detailed exchange on longstanding friendly relations between Taiwan and Japan. They covered economic and trade cooperation, energy policies, and disaster response strategies during the meeting.
Sumi underscored the necessity of developing nuclear energy, citing the high energy demands of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC, 台積電) and AI data centers. He emphasized that a stable power supply remains crucial for Taiwan's semiconductor industry and technological development. Sumi praised Taiwan's disaster response and prevention capabilities, expressing Japan's desire to continue learning from and collaborating with Taiwan on disaster prevention strategies.
