TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Office of the President (總統府) expressed support Friday (Dec. 5) for banning Chinese social media platform RedNote (小紅書). Spokesperson Karen Kuo (郭雅慧) cited the app's failure to cooperate with fraud investigations.
Kuo accompanied President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) to the Asian Pacific Congress of Nephrology (APCN) when she made the remarks supporting the Ministry of the Interior's (MOI, 內政部) decision. The presidential office backs the enforcement action against the Chinese platform due to cybersecurity concerns and lack of cooperation. Taiwan authorities have linked the app to numerous fraud cases targeting Taiwanese users.
Taiwan's National Police Agency (NPA, 警政署), under the MOI, announced Thursday it will temporarily block the Chinese social media platform RedNote for one year. The decision follows the app's involvement in 1,706 fraud cases and its failure to meet cybersecurity standards, according to Kuo's statement. The Office of the President respects and supports the enforcement, considering RedNote's reluctance to cooperate with government investigations into fraudulent activities.
Kuo addressed a Reuters exclusive report on China's, the People's Republic of China's, deployment of naval and coast guard vessels in East Asian seas and surrounding waters. She stated such military actions are not limited to the Indo-Pacific region but are distributed throughout the entire Western Pacific area. The development comes amid heightened regional tensions and strategic maneuvers in the area, raising security concerns.
She dismissed concerns of hollowing out Taiwan's semiconductor industry, noting that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TSMC, 台積電) maintains its headquarters and core operations domestically in Taiwan. The company's key technologies and strategic decision-making remain firmly rooted in Taiwan despite global expansion and international manufacturing facilities. ◼
