TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan will launch a geological survey in 2026 for a megaton-scale carbon capture and storage pilot project. Energy Administration , Taiwan's energy ministry, Deputy Director-General Chen Chung-hsien (陳崇憲) announced Monday (Nov. 17) that carbon injection will begin in 2029.
Taiwan and the British Standards Institution developed the world's first international carbon capture standard, PAS 247, since 2023. Officials released the standard Oct. 30, with Chen delivering a keynote speech at the international launch conference co-hosted by Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER, 台灣經濟研究院).
President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) energy transition policy targets 20%-27% gas with carbon capture, utilization, and storage by 2050. Taiwan Power Company (Taipower, 台電) and CPC Corporation (中油) launched separate carbon capture projects in 2023. Chen revealed plans to complete megaton-scale pilot hardware construction by 2027-2028, with commercial deployment possible by 2035. ◼
