TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Heavy rains devastated Suao Township (蘇澳鎮) earlier this week, forcing over 100 residents into emergency shelters as landslide warnings triggered mandatory evacuations. The Ministry of Agriculture (農業部) and the Agency of Rural Development and Soil and Water Conservation (水保署) issued red alerts for high-risk areas. Township officials prioritize debris-clearing operations using heavy machinery.
However, Township Chief Li Ming-che (李明哲) urged the "Shovel Heroes" (鏟子超人) volunteers on Thursday (Nov. 13) to delay their arrival, thereby preventing traffic congestion in disaster zones. Emergency centers provide shelter to displaced residents, while local businesses offer meals. Community support includes donations of instant noodles, bottled water, and wheelchairs, which are stacked at the township office entrance.
Residents contributed 900 bento boxes through Tzu Chi (慈濟) and 250 rice meals prepared by local volunteer Mr. Lin. One resident woke at 5 a.m. to prepare meals, delivering them by truck before 11 a.m. Paint store employees warn that floodwaters must be cleared quickly before they solidify.
Officials maintain vigilance as ongoing rain threatens additional landslides in affected areas. Recovery operations continue with the coordinated efforts of government machinery clearing debris from flood-damaged zones. The Township Office serves as a central distribution hub for emergency supplies and community donations. ◼
