TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The use of Taiwan's mobile citizen certificate (TW FidO) has been growing rapidly, said Minister of the Interior Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) on Friday (Nov. 14). According to a press release, the TW FidO has been used 12.61 million times as of October this year, with nearly 10,000 online digital signatures using the mobile citizen certificate daily. The TW FidO is the showcase of the Ministry of the Interior's (內政部) exhibit at the EdTech Taiwan (行動自然人憑證主題館) expo, which opened Thursday (Nov. 13).
Minister Liu emphasized the significant adoption of the mobile citizen certificate. By the end of October, over 1.17 million certificates at been issued, and nearly 350 government agencies and companies have adopted the service. Liu noted the app's compliance with the FIDO 2.0 standard, which utilizes biometric technology to enhance both convenience and security.
Since its inception in 2003, the citizen digital certificate has held legal validity. The Ministry of the Interior later introduced the mobile version of the certificate by releasing an app in 2022, allowing citizens to perform identity verification or online signing via mobile devices. The applications of the TW FidO span various sectors, including government agencies, information technology, and finance.
