TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Fung-wong (鳳凰颱風) weakened into a tropical depression Thursday (Nov. 13), bringing rainfall to northern Taiwan. Meteorologist Wu Sheng-yu (吳聖宇) reports the system moved to the northeast coast and merges with a frontal system. Rain is expected to ease later Thursday as the storm continues weakening.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) lifted the typhoon warning at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 12) after Fung-wong weakened. New Taipei City's Wanli (萬里) district recorded the highest rainfall accumulation at 172.5 mm (6.8 inches). Northeast monsoon and residual moisture increased rainfall overnight across affected regions.
Wu warns the northeast monsoon will remain strong through Friday (Nov. 14), bringing gusts of 7-9 on the Beaufort scale (49-88 km/h). Coastal areas and outlying islands face continued strong winds until conditions improve over the weekend. Saturday (Nov. 15) and Sunday (Nov. 16) should see weakening monsoon with brief showers possible.
Authorities report 121 flooding incidents with 10 unresolved, primarily in Yilan County as of Wednesday (Nov. 12) evening. Nationwide disaster incidents totaled 471 cases, with Yilan County accounting for 213 incidents. Injuries reached 88 people, with Yilan County reporting the highest number at 35 casualties.
