TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Floodwaters submerged a temporary road Tuesday (Nov. 11) morning in Hualien County after Typhoon Fung-wong (鳳凰) brought heavy rains. The Highway Bureau (公路局), Taiwan's road management agency, closed the temporary culvert road on Monday (Nov. 10) as waters rose. Footage shows Matai'an Creek (馬太鞍溪) swelling and thoroughly washing away the roadway.
Hualien County evacuated 7,442 people and sheltered 785 individuals due to flooding from Typhoon. Police from Fenglin Township (鳳林) warned residents to stay away from the dangerous area. County authorities closed multiple roads in Wanrong Township (萬榮鄉) and Yuli Township (玉里鎮) as precautionary measures.
Highway Bureau crews stationed personnel and erected barricades at the flooded site. Officials placed traffic cones and warning lights along Provincial Highway 9 (台9線) to redirect motorists. Authorities activated safety measures to protect residents and travelers in affected areas.
Officials urge drivers to use alternative routes to avoid flooded areas. Motorists traveling between Hualien and Taitung can take Provincial Highways 9 and 11 (台11線) via Hualien Bridge (花蓮大橋). Routes to Ruisui (瑞穗), Yuli, and Fuli townships (富里) require Provincial Highway 9 to 11 to 30 (台30線). ◼
