TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Samsung Electronics (三星電子) has launched the sleep apnea detection feature on its Samsung Health Monitor app in Taiwan on Monday (Nov. 10). The Taiwan FDA (台灣衛生福利部食品藥物管理署) has approved this feature, which aims to help users proactively identify potential sleep apnea risks.
Samsung stated that the sleep apnea detection function on the Galaxy Watch series supports devices from the Galaxy Watch4 series onward. Users must pair these smartwatches with Galaxy smartphones running Android 12.0 or higher. After a software update, the Samsung Health Monitor app will enable users to identify potential sleep apnea risks, specifically targeting individuals aged 22 and older who have not been diagnosed with the condition.
Sleep apnea, a common yet often overlooked sleep disorder, causes breathing interruptions during sleep, potentially leading to oxygen supply disruptions and decreased sleep quality. This condition may increase the risk of complications such as high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmia, and stroke if left untreated. However, many individuals remain unaware of their symptoms.
Samsung has clarified that this product is not suitable for users diagnosed with sleep apnea, those with exercise-related diseases, heart or lung diseases, or individuals under 22 years of age. This latest feature reflects Samsung's commitment to leveraging technology for health monitoring and prevention. As more users gain access to this function, the company hopes to enhance awareness and early detection of sleep apnea in Taiwan.
