TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Shin Kong Life Insurance Co., Ltd (新光人壽) broke ground Thursday (Oct. 16) on disputed Beitou-Shilin Technology Park (北投士林科技園區) sites amid ongoing NVIDIA (輝達) compensation dispute. General Manager Welch Lin (林維俊) of Shinkong Financial Holding Co. (台新新光金控) clarified the compensation issue hindering NVIDIA's plans remains unrelated to Taipei City Government.
Lin emphasized Shinkong Life Insurance never intended to profit from Taipei City Government or Taiwanese taxpayers, stating the company legally acquired construction rights. He addressed land speculation accusations by noting Shinkong holds a superficies agreement with Taipei City Government requiring contractual compliance. Lin dismissed claims of inaction while asserting NVIDIA's entry requires legal framework discussions.
The memorandum of understanding between Shinkong Life Insurance and NVIDIA expired in late September after both parties reached agreement in May. Lin revealed NVIDIA agreed to pay compensation to relinquish construction rights while expressing confidence in resolving the current stalemate. He hopes NVIDIA will remain and plans direct discussions with both the city government and NVIDIA. ◼
