TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Coast Guard intercepted a Chinese national attempting illegal entry into Kinmen (金門) Monday (Oct. 14) after surveillance technology detected his movements. The Coast Guard Administration's (CGA, 海巡署), Taiwan's maritime security agency, Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch (金馬澎分署) apprehended the approximately 50-year-old man using advanced monitoring systems. Authorities dispatched patrol boats immediately upon detection.
Coast Guard personnel retrieved the dehydrated man who carried only 100 RMB (around US$14) in a coordinated maritime operation. Officials conducted preliminary examinations after bringing him aboard the patrol vessel. The CGA emphasized how technological surveillance equipment successfully tracked his movements and integrated coastal enforcement efforts to ensure interception.
The man drifted 0.8 nautical miles (1.5 km) north of Tianmoshan (天摩山) with two buoys for nearly eight hours before rescue. He claimed tourism as his motive for entering Taiwan, but authorities deemed his statement suspicious given the circumstances. Prosecutors continue investigating his true motives and potential criminal involvement in the illegal crossing. ◼
