TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of the Interior (MOI, 內政部) announced on Tuesday (Oct. 14) that Taiwan has achieved over 220,000 social housing units nationwide. The National Housing and Urban Regeneration Center (國家住宅及都市更新中心) has awarded bids for 1,666 units, while rent subsidies have been approved for more than 849,000 households.
By the end of September, Taiwan had reached 222,144 social housing units. Of these, 121,077 were directly constructed, and 101,067 were under effective leasing and management contracts. The Ministry of the Interior has allocated a budget of NT$42.8 billion for this year's Million Rental Housing Support Plan (百萬租屋家庭計畫), with nearly 70% or approximately NT$29 billion already spent.
Looking ahead, the ministry plans to launch a project to assist young married families with housing next year, investing around NT$27 billion. This initiative will include increased subsidies and relaxed application criteria to support young families. The Ministry of the Interior explained that the central government aims to expand social housing capacity through diverse strategies and regulatory reviews, collaborating with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC, 交通部) to utilize additional floor space at MRT stations.
The MOI emphasized that the Million Rental Housing Support Plan is progressing steadily. Officials encourage local governments to collaborate with the central government to enhance social housing policies, ensuring they meet the diverse residential needs of the population.
