TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) used his medical training to help a Lions Clubs International member who fainted during a Presidential Office tour Monday (Oct. 13). The Taiwan leader, a former physician, immediately stepped in to provide assistance when the incident occurred during the group visit. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator Chiu Yi-ying (邱議瑩) accompanied the visiting group.
Video footage showed Lai crouching beside the unconscious woman to conduct a basic medical assessment while another woman massaged the member's leg. Presidential Office Secretary-General Pan Men-an (潘孟安) directed others to give the president space to work. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator Lai Jui-lung (賴瑞隆) reassured the woman that Taiwan's president is a trained doctor.
Legislator Chiu Yi-ying (邱議瑩) later reported on social media that the Lions Club member regained consciousness within minutes and suffered no injuries. Lai served as a clinical physician at National Cheng Kung University (國立成功大學) Hospital before entering politics, bringing extensive medical experience to the presidency. His medical credentials include a bachelor's degree from National Cheng Kung University College of Medicine (國立成功大學醫學院) and service as chief resident in 1994. ◼
