TAIPEI (TVBS News) — EVA Air (長榮航空) launched an investigation Monday (Oct. 13) into the death of a flight attendant who died after completing her shift. The Taoyuan Flight Attendants Union (桃園市空服員職業工會) demanded the airline investigate the incident and show greater empathy toward crew health concerns. The airline received news of the attendant's death Oct. 11 and is maintaining communication with the family.
Social media posts Sunday claimed the flight attendant felt unwell during duty but received no immediate assistance from the cabin chief. The attendant reportedly requested medical attention after disembarking but did not receive help, leading to hospitalization and eventual death. Online users attributed the tragedy to systemic neglect of crew member health within the airline industry, highlighting broader workplace safety concerns.
The union highlighted unique occupational hazards flight attendants face, including irregular shifts, overwork, cabin pressure, and ultraviolet exposure that weaken immune systems significantly. EVA Air does not require sick employees to work, but strict leave policies affect performance evaluations, promotions, and year-end bonuses. The union argued these policies discourage workers from taking necessary sick leave despite serious health risks.
EVA Air (長榮航空) expressed sorrow over the flight attendant's death and confirmed launching a formal investigation into the incident Monday. The airline maintains communication with the deceased's family to provide support during this difficult period following the tragedy. The company emphasized its commitment to employee welfare while the investigation proceeds to determine the specific circumstances surrounding the death. ◼
