TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), Taiwan's parliament leader, warned Friday (Oct. 10) that three critical challenges threaten Taiwan's future: war in the Taiwan Strait, political division, and tariff negotiations. Han used the metaphor of a "dammed lake" that devastated Hualien Guangfu Township (光復鄉) in September, killing 19 people, to underscore the urgent need for action. Taiwan's National Day address highlighted these mounting crises facing the island democracy.
Han emphasized how recall movements, Taiwan's political mechanism for removing officials, have created societal rifts, while de-Sinicization policies increase war probability, and ideological burdens affect energy strategies. He stressed that tariff negotiations could sacrifice Taiwan's future, portraying these interconnected issues as urgent crises requiring immediate attention. The Legislative Yuan President, Taiwan's parliamentary leader, also honored volunteers assisting disaster recovery efforts in central and southern Taiwan and Hualien's Guangfu Township.
Han called for parliamentary reform and bipartisan cooperation to address these mounting threats to Taiwan's stability. He acknowledged the Taiwan Stock Exchange's rise above 26,000 points but criticized the prevalence of low-wage workers, who exceed 1.2 million people. The parliamentary leader also condemned environmental damage from solar panel installations and illegal excavation by unscrupulous businessmen at the Grand Canyon of Meinong (美濃大峽谷), a scenic landmark.
Han acknowledged contributions from TSMC (台積電), Taiwan's semiconductor giant, Fo Guang Shan (佛光山), a prominent Buddhist organization, and Tzu Chi (慈濟), Taiwan's largest charity foundation, crediting them for stability across Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu over six decades. He attributed this prosperity to national unity under the flag of the Republic of China (ROC, 中華民國) . Taiwan's parliamentary leader emphasized that decisive reform and unity remain essential for safeguarding the nation's future amid escalating regional challenges.
