TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Veterans Affairs Council Minister Yen Teh-fa (嚴德發) assured legislators Wednesday (Oct. 8) that no retired generals attended China's military parade marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance against Japan. Yen addressed the Legislative Yuan's (立法院), Taiwan's parliament, Foreign and National Defense Committee (外交及國防委員會), emphasizing legal amendments' deterrent effect on veterans participating in Chinese Communist Party activities.
Yen highlighted ongoing Chinese Communist Party infiltration efforts while praising Taiwan's veterans for their patriotism and national identity. He supported proposed amendments to discourage veterans from engaging with Chinese activities. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Legislator Puma Shen (沈伯洋) urged the Executive Yuan (行政院), Taiwan's cabinet, to expedite legislation protecting Taiwan's national security and dignity.
Yen reported that recent disasters in Hualien's Guangfu Township affected 204 veteran families in Guangfu, Fenglin, and Wanrong townships. Taipei Veterans General Hospital Yuli Branch (台北榮總玉里分院) provided medical equipment and established a service station in response. The Veterans Affairs Council will complete condolence payments by Thursday (Oct. 9). ◼
