TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei Zoo (台北市立動物園) confirmed the death of Croissant (可頌) on Friday (Oct. 3). The red panda, part of a mission to enhance the genetic diversity of the endangered species, passed away on Thursday morning (Oct. 2) despite intensive medical care.
The Taipei Zoo sent Croissant to Japan's Tama Zoological Park in April last year, according to officials. By mid-September, staff noted a decline in his energy and activity. An infection and fluid accumulation in his chest were treated, but he faced breathing difficulties. Temporary improvement occurred in late September, but his condition deteriorated, leading to his death on Oct. 2.
Born in 2017 at the Taipei Zoo, Croissant was known for his bold yet meticulous nature, making him ideal for the breeding exchange program. The Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums coordinated his transfer to Japan. The Taipei Zoo mourned his loss and thanked Croissant for his contributions to the zoo's community. ◼
