TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Education (教育部) announced Friday (Oct. 3) that students participating in disaster relief coursework can access Higher Education Sprout Project (高教深耕) grants. Three major universities, including National Taiwan University (國立台灣大學), released transportation and insurance subsidies to encourage student involvement in Guangfu Township (光復鄉) disaster relief efforts. The policy enables academic institutions to support community service through existing funding mechanisms.
Ministry officials emphasized university disaster relief programs align with Article 1 of the University Act (大學法), mandating institutions "serve society and promote national development" (服務社會、促進國家發展). The initiative demonstrates higher education's commitment to social responsibility beyond traditional academic boundaries. Several universities supplement government funding with institutional resources, reinforcing Taiwan's culture of community service and civic engagement.
Ministry officials urged universities to prioritize disaster prevention awareness while supporting student relief participation. The guidance ensures students maintain safety during community service activities while fulfilling educational objectives. Taiwan's approach emphasizes balancing academic learning, social service, and student welfare following Hualien's natural disaster. ◼
