TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A devastating overflow at Matai'an Landslide Lake (馬太鞍溪堰塞湖) in Hualien County caused severe flooding Tuesday (Sept. 23). The torrent swept away Matian'an Bridge (馬太鞍溪橋) by 3:20 p.m. Multiple villages face widespread destruction from the catastrophic flooding.

Floodwaters breached defenses and inundated Guangfu Township's (光復鄉) Daping Village (大平村), Dama Village (大馬村), and Fata'an Tribe (馬太鞍部落). Hualien County Fire Department reported 66 rescue cases, 77 people trapped, and two missing by 5 p.m. Officials requested assistance from Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Taitung County fire departments plus private rescue groups.

Mud-laden floodwaters surged into Guangfu's urban area, reaching one storey high and forcing residents onto rooftops and car tops. The fire department urged residents to seek vertical refuge while prioritizing rescues of those trapped on first floors. All missing person cases occurred in Guangfu Township.

Viral online videos show stranded residents while Hualien County Fire Department confirms ongoing rescue operations throughout the affected areas. Authorities emphasized safety precautions and urged residents to stay informed as rescue teams work to reach trapped individuals. Emergency responders continue coordinating multi-county assistance efforts for the unprecedented flooding disaster. ◼
