TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's health authorities are sounding the alarm on Wednesday (Sept. 10), World Suicide Prevention Day, as suicide rates climb among teenagers and middle-aged adults. The Ministry of Health and Welfare, Taiwan's health ministry, (MHW, 衛福部) reports depression as the primary driver behind this troubling trend. Psychiatrist Chou Po-han (周伯翰) describes depression as a complex condition influenced by genetic factors, personality traits, family dynamics, social pressures, and hormonal imbalances.

The psychiatrist reveals that 95% of suicide cases stem from mental health disorders, with depression accounting for 85% of these tragic outcomes. Chou emphasizes that depression's diverse nature demands individualized treatment approaches tailored to each patient's unique circumstances. Treatment-resistant depression often requires repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) therapy, which works best when combined with medications, psychological counseling, and strong family support systems.

The medical expert dispels common misconceptions about antidepressants, assuring patients these medications are non-addictive and restore mental and physical equilibrium. Treatment failures should prompt doctors to reassess their diagnostic approach or modify therapeutic strategies. Patients benefit from consistent medication schedules, structured daily routines, regular exercise, and nutritional supplements including vitamin D3 and EPA. Chou advises loved ones to avoid toxic positivity, blame, or medication interference, emphasizing that compassionate listening provides the most meaningful support. ◼
