TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (央氣象署) warned Tuesday (Sept. 2) that a moderate geomagnetic storm has been affecting the island since 2 a.m. The solar disturbance originated from active region AR4199 on the sun's surface Aug. 31. This region produced a long-duration M-class flare with significant coronal mass ejection that could reach G3 intensity levels, with disruptions potentially lasting 24 hours.
The administration reported that the solar storm has intensified solar wind speed and density throughout interplanetary space. The phenomenon threatens to temporarily disrupt satellite navigation systems and both low-frequency and high-frequency radio communication equipment across Taiwan. Dr. Chang Chia-ming (張家銘), a genetic physician, cautioned that solar storms could significantly impact human health, potentially triggering increased heart rates, elevated blood pressure, and palpitations, with heart attack and stroke risks rising 25% to 60%.
Dr. Chang further observed that individuals particularly sensitive to electromagnetic fields might experience additional symptoms including dizziness, headaches, chest tightness, palpitations, and insomnia during the geomagnetic disturbance. The physician recommended maintaining stable daily routines and minimizing electronic device usage throughout this period to reduce potential health impacts. Health experts suggest these precautionary measures could help mitigate the storm's effects on vulnerable populations. ◼
