TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A competitive mayoral race is emerging in New Taipei City as new polling data released Tuesday (Aug. 19) shows fluctuating support levels among potential candidates from Taiwan's major political parties. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧), positioning herself as the DPP Taiwan's ruling party potential mayoral candidate, addressed the polling results through a self-recorded video statement. The survey results highlight the dynamic nature of Taiwan's local political landscape as parties prepare for the crucial municipal election.

Su stressed the critical importance of Democratic Progressive Party collaboration with civic organizations to maintain Taiwan's constitutional democratic order. The comprehensive polling examined multiple electoral scenarios featuring various potential candidates from different political camps. Current results show Su trailing by 8.5 percentage points behind Lee Shu-chuan (李四川), Taipei's deputy mayor who leads among Kuomintang candidates Taiwan's main opposition party. Su acknowledged New Taipei City's status as a traditional blue camp conservative coalition stronghold while emphasizing that the polling gap has narrowed considerably to single digits.

The polling data reveals dramatically different outcomes under alternative candidate configurations that could reshape the electoral dynamics. Su would secure a 5.8 percentage point advantage if Taiwan People's Party chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) emerged as a unified candidate representing both KMT and TPP Taiwan's third-largest party coalitions. Su's lead would expand substantially to 11.4 percentage points in scenarios featuring KMT candidate Liu Ho-jan (劉和然), demonstrating the significant impact of candidate selection on voter preferences. ◼
