TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) issued urgent warnings Wednesday (July 30) that Taiwan's southwest monsoon will unleash continuous rainfall across central and southern regions until next Tuesday. The weather expert advised residents to prepare for severe atmospheric conditions and dangerous instability throughout the extended period. Wu emphasized the prolonged nature of this weather system, which threatens to bring sustained precipitation to Taiwan's most populated areas.
Wu detailed how the southwest monsoon system could unleash localized showers and thunderstorms, accompanied by torrential rainfall powerful enough to trigger natural disasters across affected regions. The meteorologist elaborated that weather impacts would intensify dramatically during afternoon hours, potentially spawning dangerous lightning strikes, fierce winds, and sudden catastrophic downpours concentrated in small geographic areas. These afternoon weather patterns pose the greatest threat to public safety and infrastructure.
Statistics from the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) Taiwan's national weather service revealed that Chunri Township (春日鄉) in Pingtung County recorded Taiwan's highest accumulated rainfall at 294 millimeters (11.6 inches) as of 8 a.m. Meanwhile, bureau data indicated that Tropical Storm CO-MAY was approaching China's Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, while Tropical Storm Krosa remained active south of Japan without threatening Taiwan. The rainfall measurements underscore the intensity of current weather systems affecting the island.
Wu predicted that strengthening Pacific high pressure systems would restore clear and stable weather conditions by next Wednesday and Thursday, signaling the return of intense midsummer heat across Taiwan. Residents should anticipate a dramatic atmospheric shift from the current wet and unstable conditions to bright, sunny weather patterns. The meteorologist's forecast suggests relief from persistent rainfall will coincide with Taiwan's characteristic summer heat returning to the island.
