TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologists issued a high-temperature alert for Taiwan's eastern regions of Taitung and Hualien counties on Monday (June 16), warning that temperatures could soar to 36 degrees Celsius (96.8°F). The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's national weather agency, urged residents to take precautions against prolonged sun exposure as the summer heat intensifies across the island's picturesque eastern coast.
Meteorologist Wu Der-romg (吳德榮) forecasted a week of intense summer heat in his column for the Meteorological Application Promotion and Development Foundation (氣象應用推廣基金會), a prominent weather research organization. Wu noted that while localized afternoon showers or thunderstorms would become more frequent, the likelihood of tropical disturbances developing over the next 10 days remains low, significantly reducing their chances of affecting Taiwan's weather patterns during the early summer period.
The latest European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model indicates Taiwan will experience predominantly clear to partly cloudy skies from Wednesday (Jun 18) through next week, with only brief afternoon showers or thunderstorms expected in mountainous regions. In a separate analysis shared on his Facebook page, meteorologist Lin De-en (林得恩) noted that preliminary signals suggest new tropical disturbances might develop in late June across the northwestern Pacific extending to the South China Sea, though he emphasized the certainty of this prediction remains low at present. ◼
