TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan braces for scorching temperatures on Tuesday (May 20) as the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issues heat alerts across the southern and eastern regions. While Greater Taipei, Yilan, and Hualien residents can expect afternoon thunderstorms breaking through mostly sunny skies, temperatures in six counties could exceed 36 degrees Celsius (96.8°F), prompting officials to warn of potential health risks.

The outlying islands face varying conditions, with Penghu enjoying relatively clear skies and temperatures between 26 and 32 degrees Celsius (78.8-89.6°F). Kinmen residents should prepare for mostly cloudy conditions with temperatures ranging from 25 to 31 degrees Celsius (77-87.8°F). Meanwhile, Matsu will experience occasional showers under cloudy skies with temperatures spanning 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77-86°F). Transportation officials caution that morning fog could impact ferry and flight schedules to Kinmen and Matsu.

Environmental authorities at the Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network (環境部空氣品質預報) warn that prevailing southern winds could trap pollutants over northern Taiwan today. Health officials note that afternoon sunlight may trigger photochemical reactions in western regions, elevating ozone concentrations. While eleven counties and municipalities including Taitung (台東) and Penghu maintain "good" air quality ratings, residents in northern and central Taiwan, along with those in Matsu and Kinmen, should expect "moderate" conditions throughout the day.

Health officials urge residents to take precautions against the intense heat by staying hydrated and limiting outdoor activities during peak temperatures. Meteorologists recommend carrying umbrellas for both sun protection and afternoon thunderstorms in northern and eastern regions. Those with respiratory sensitivities should monitor air quality updates throughout the day, particularly in areas expecting elevated ozone levels during afternoon hours. ◼
