TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) congratulated Canada on its successful federal election on Tuesday (April 29). The ministry commended Canada for setting a global benchmark for democratic processes.
The ministry remarked that the election was held in Eastern Canada and involved a complete turnover of the 343 seats in the House of Commons. The governing Liberal Party emerged with the most seats, ensuring a smooth and peaceful electoral process.
MOFA said that Taiwan and Canada share universal values such as democracy, freedom, and human rights. The ministry noted that relations between the two nations have grown steadily in recent years, particularly since Canada released its Indo-Pacific Strategy in 2022. This strategy has led to closer cooperation in economic, technological, medical, and indigenous affairs.
The ministry stated that, in 2023 and 2024, Taiwan and Canada signed the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) and the Science and Technology Innovation Agreement (STIA). These agreements have further strengthened bilateral ties.
Also, the ministry pointed out that Canada announced its participation in the Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) last August, underscoring its commitment to international collaboration. The ministry expressed Taiwan's optimism about the continued growth of its partnership with Canada, fostering further collaboration in diverse fields.
