TAIPEI (TVBS News) — EVA Air (長榮航空) announced on Thursday (April 24) that it signed procurement contracts with three sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) suppliers and Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (台塑石化). The airline will introduce 2% SAF in flights departing from European airports starting in the first quarter 2025.
In the second quarter of 2025, EVA Air will expand its SAF usage to major operational hubs in North America, Japan, and Taiwan. The airline successfully used Formosa Petrochemical's domestically produced SAF on flights from Taipei Songshan Airport to Seoul Gimpo Airport, and from Kaohsiung Xiaogang Airport to Osaka Kansai Airport a day earlier.
EVA Air president Clay Sun (孫嘉明) emphasized that the collaboration with AEG, COSMO, and Formosa Petrochemical symbolizes a firm commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions. This move marks a significant step toward reducing the airline's carbon footprint. China Airlines (中華航空) also prioritizes SAF development, planning to procure over 2,500 tons of Formosa's domestically produced SAF in 2025. The airline will incorporate SAF into flights departing from Taoyuan, projecting a carbon reduction of 6,500 tons.
Additionally, China Airlines and Formosa Petrochemical will sign a memorandum of understanding to expand SAF procurement to over 10,000 tons in the next three years. It used 40% internationally certified SAF on flights from Kaohsiung to Bangkok and Songshan to Haneda, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 26.7 tons on Wednesday.
