TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Public servants in Taipei and New Taipei City face mounting pressure from high living costs, leading many to resign early or transfer to other regions. These challenges, exacerbated by soaring housing and living expenses, have diminished the allure of the traditionally stable "iron rice bowl" jobs.
Even police officers, who typically earn higher salaries, feel the strain. PK, a grassroots officer, explains that a monthly income of NT$50,000 to NT$60,000 barely covers living expenses in the Taipei area, including rent, food, and family costs. Many colleagues, PK noted, are opting for transfers to central or southern Taiwan, where living costs and work pressures are lower.
Hsin Ping-lung (辛炳隆), an adjunct associate professor at National Taiwan University's (NTU, 台灣大學) Graduate Institute of National Development (國家發展研究所), observes a trend where public servants prefer central Taiwan for its lower costs and reduced stress, reversing the previous migration toward metropolitan areas.
Wu Hung-i (吳虹儀), a senior career consultant, highlights the apprehension among public servants about transitioning to the private sector. However, Wu emphasized that public service experience remains valuable. As public servants navigate these challenges, the stability of the "iron rice bowl" continues to symbolize security amid economic uncertainties.
